A Brief Word on Chariformissional Theology

chariformissional.jpgThe Reformed, Charismatic and Missional communities have often been considered mutually exclusive. People have sometimes assumed that you could not be a Reformed Calvinist (since a large portion of Calvinists are cessasionists) and still be Charismatic. Also, extreme forms of Calvinism have found it unnecessary to be an evangelical (missional) when God already knows who He has selected before all time. While charismatics have been accused of being more concerned with emotional ecstasy then they are with good theology or world missions, the "missional" and "emerging" communities have been accused of throwing out solid theology and abandoning the Holy Spirit guidance for cultural absorption and seeker friendly subjectivity. Undoubtedly there has been some portion of truth to each accusation but simple generalizations will not suffice - since even in the Reformed movement we have major differences between the hard line Calvinists and Armenians. We believe that the major issues are what unify us in the body of Christ (church), whether we are Catholic, Baptist, Methodist or Bible Church, and minor issues we give freedom.

Chariformissional Theology is an approach that uses the Holy Spirit's inspired word of God to integrate all three theologies in a non-contradictory manner: Kingdom (Charismatic) Theology, Reformed Theology, and Missional Theology.

Labels such as Calvinist, Armenian, Lutheran and Catholic mean nothing, as each bring to the table important truths about the kingdom of God. Chariformissional thinkers might choose the label Enlightened Eclectic to form a temporary label for those people who go to the Word of God with a Holy Spirit inspired bent because we are people who worship in spirit and truth. We are enlightened by the word of God, as the Holy Spirit enlightens our mind- and this enlightenment by the Holy Spirit does not depart when we take our nose out of the word, nor does it contradict the word with new and wacky divergent ideas. It is clear in God's word that we are to be missional salt and light to our community, so that God may redeem those who are His elect.God has used signs and wonders in the Old Testament, New Testament and in these latter days - and the word of God, and the fruit of the Spirit, is our standard by which we measure the efficacy of our missional endeavors.
